The Hunter House (The Gingerbread House) - 580 S. Main St., Madison, GA
The Hunter House (circa 1883-1887) has been in one family since it was built as a wedding gift from John Hudson Hunter for his bride Ida Clark. House proud, his initials are on the house. Their children Mamie and Nathan inherited the home, and Nathan's wife Evelyn lived in it until she passed away at the age of 103, at which point their granddaughters, Layne and Laura Brightwell, bought the home from the estate and restored it. All this to say this home has never been available to renters until now.
Often called "the most photographed house in Georgia," this 4300 square ft., 4 bedroom, 5 bath home rests on 1.4 acres in the heart of Madison, GA, 60 miles east of Atlanta.
Home rents month-to-month for $4,800 and is fully furnished. Utilities, WiFi and yard care are included. We can recommend a great housekeeper. Nine fireplaces add charm, but only the one in the kitchen is currently set up to operate. Original heart pine floors throughout, following full restoration after being covered for decades under carpeting. Stained glass doors and windows add charm and colorful sunlit lighting throughout this Victorian home, and the ornate gingerbread woodwork adds elegance.
This one-of-a-kind house makes a special 'home away from home' while you are working on a film, remodeling your home in Athens, at Reynolds, the lake or anywhere, for that matter, new to Madison, escaping city life and the pandemic, trying to figure out where to live, or temporarily between homes.
Renter beware, however - this house has never been open to the public for renting, and while it has been lovingly restored, it has not been remodeled - meaning it is still very much a nearly 150 year old home, complete with its quirks and sometimes inconveniences. We want our renters to love living here (we certainly love our staycations at the Gingerbread House), but we also will ask that you be gentle with this amazing home and patient with any issues it may and very likely will have. Sometimes the breakers blow, for example. Of course, we will be responsible for the repairs (assuming you have not been careless), and we have electricians, plumbers, and contractors available nearby, but they can't always come the second we call. That said, they know the home well and are well equipped to repair any issues that may happen. We feel our price reflects its imperfections, and it is our guess that once you move in, you will appreciate that we warned you, and also hopefully feel that we over-exaggerated its issues.
While we have also tried to provide everything needed so you can simply move in, please let us know what your expectations are ahead of time so we can work together to provide what we may have missed or ask that you provide them. We definitely don't want you to be without!

Thank you!
I remember when you were restoring your home several years ago. You did a lovely job! Everything looks beautiful!
